In my last post I wrote about my research on Cyborgs, as part of my MA course long time ago. I never thought that I will meet a cyborg one day. And that’s my mother. She recently had a unilateral knee replacement, minimally invasive, but painful. She now belongs to the category called ‘medical cyborgs’… learning to walk with a titanium knee. The upper part of the leg was swollen after the operation as you can see from the photo.
Here is an animation of a knee replacement surgery. Impressive.

How is your mother’s knee now? My mom just had her knee replaced about an hour ago and starts rehab tomorrow…
Posted by Adam Michael Drake | 29/03/2011, 5:35 pmAfter a couple of days she started walking with a stick. After a month she walked without a stick. 6 months and she started swimming, and now she runs, does pilates, she is a new person! 8-12 months until full recovery I’d say.
Your mum’s knee will be swollen and she will be in pain after the anesthesia fades out. They gave my mum morphine tablets and strong pain killers. Make sure she gets a bigger dose of them as the pain is unbearable. But that is normal. She has to start moving asap, it is part of the recovery and to eliminate danger of blood cloth. I wish your mum a speedy recovery! P.S. Jane Fonda, the actress, blogged about her knee and hip replacements here: http://janefonda.com/so-long-old-knee/.
